Boat & Jetski Licensing Course
- QUICK FACTS
- Your TRAINER & ASSESSOR: Ed Gibson will be conducting the majority of the courses and assessments. Ed holds a Master 5, Marine Engine Driver Grade 2, Offshore Yacht Master along with his Trainer & Assessor qualifications. Ed is a AMSA assessor for commercial qualifications as well. Along with the recreational licensing courses he teaches an array of commercial courses through the YBI RTO out of Bundaberg. 'RTO 31116' He is a highly experienced mariner and dive master and has travelled over 85,000nm at sea. Our recreational boat (RMDL) and jet ski (PWC) license courses are conducted within the guidelines as set by Boatsafe Queensland; a division of Maritime Safety Queensland. COSTS: RMDL - Recreational Boat License: $300 plus $20 for the online component
- PWC - Recreational Jet Ski License: $300 plus $20 for the online component Combined RMDL & PWC License - Boat & Jet Ski: $500 plus $40 for the online component
- Reassessment fee of $100 + $9 online fee includes training and assessment.
- Online theory course should take you approximately 4-5hrs at home
- Practical Assessment will take approximately 4-5 hours.
- Before undertaking your Practical Assessment of your BoatSafe course it is recommended if possible that you gain some on water experience with a competent and licensed recreational boat driver.

- Quite simply, this is the course you need to acquire your Queensland Recreational Marine Driver’s Licence - RMDL (Boat Licence) to master/skipper a recreational power boat with a motor of 6HP or greater. As a Captain comes responsibility!
- The boat licence course incorporates:
- - online video theory learning and online theory assessment
- - a final multiple choice theory assessment (50 questions)
- - practical training and assessment on the training vessel
- You must successfully complete all tasks on the vessel and pass the theory exam at 100% to be deemed competent. Let's face it... you don't want your aeroplane pilot passing his exams at say 70%! But don’t panic, our skilled instructors/trainers are here to support you in developing the required competence levels to pass your assessments.
- COURSE CONTENT
- You will learn and be competent in:
- Planning your trip
- Understanding marine safety, legal obligations and seaworthiness
- Main parts of a small recreational boat
- Boat maintenance
- Safety equipment and pre launch checks
- GPS systems and determining position
- Applying COLREGS system of navigation to prevent collision at sea
- Weather and tides
- Responding to marine emergencies and incidents
- In addition, the practical component on our vessel includes explanation, demonstration, practice and assessment of the following activities:
- Manoeuvres at slow/safe speed – 6 knots or less, Port and Starboard turns
- Manoeuvres at speed (on the plane) – Port and Starboard turns and figure 8
- Man overboard drill
- Safely approach a floating object
- Emergency stop
- Berthing and unberthing
- General navigation and control of the boat
- You have passed!... What's next?
- On successful completion of the boat and or jet ski licence course, you’ll receive a Statement of Competency (SoC). This is an official assessment document verifying that you have passed all the necessary theory and practical assessments.
- To acquire your Recreational Marine Driver Licence, you must present your SoC at a Transport and Motoring Service Centre within 3 months of issue along with the application form and prescribed fee and at that time a photo license will be issued or your driver licensed will be amended to reflect your Recreational boat license.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Your statement of competency (SoC) is not a boat licence or temporary licence. Your Recreational Boat or Jet Ski License will be issued by the Department of Main Roads once you have submitted your application along with your SoC amd paid the prescribed fee.
